Mr Mark Fraundorfer with New Zealand’s Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro

On Tuesday 15 September 2026, Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro invested Tauranga urologist Mark Fraundorfer as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) at an investiture ceremony in Wellington.

The honour recognises Mark’s services to health, particularly men’s health, and his decades-long commitment to advancing urological care in New Zealand.

As Head of the Urology Department at Tauranga Hospital, Mark has contributed to the development of minimally invasive urological techniques that have gone on to become established treatments in New Zealand and internationally.

Throughout his career, Mark has also worked to encourage more open conversations about men’s health. His community education initiatives, seminars and free men’s health clinics have helped raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancer, erectile dysfunction and the importance of seeking medical advice early.

Mark’s contribution extends well beyond clinical practice. He has participated in public policy discussions, served as Medical Advisor to the New Zealand Underwater Association and played an instrumental role in establishing the Kathleen Kilgour Centre in Tauranga, an independent radiation oncology service caring for publicly and privately funded patients.

He has also contributed his expertise to the development of important healthcare facilities, including Grace Hospital in Tauranga and Wakefield Hospital in Wellington.

This prestigious honour reflects Mark’s longstanding dedication to his patients, his community and the advancement of healthcare. We warmly congratulate Mark on this well-deserved recognition.
