Meet Prof. Peter Gilling CNZM - Urologist

Peter has a deep and ongoing commitment to patient care and innovation in both the private and public sector in the specialty of urology but is also actively involved with the teaching and mentoring of students to support the next generation of health professionals in the Bay of Plenty.

He was recently ranked number six in the world by Expertscape for his research and treatment of Benign Prostatic Enlargement (BPH).  He has published over 100 scientific articles and book chapters and is on the Editorial Board of six international urology journals.  Peter has been awarded the SIU Distinguished Career Award by the Societe Internationale d'Urologie and the RACS Surgical Research Award for 2015 by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for his achievements as both a clinician and a researcher.  He introduced robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy to New Zealand in 2007 and with his partner, Mark Fraundorfer, developed Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate which is now practiced throughout the world.  He pioneered laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery in urology in New Zealand, amongst other procedures, and continues to research and develop new treatment options for patients for a variety of urological conditions.
